Diverse units. While there's no one-unit-to-rule-them-all situation in the age, the units are still pretty good. Picking the right army to face a defense keeps things interesting for me - and there's some utility to manual battle as well. Sub Cruiser + Rogues is my low attrition/default setup that works against most things.

As mentioned by edcollo it all depends on who you are fighting. Cant use PA against DD, But PA will know our SS and other PA , Rail Guns etc. SS is awesome against DD and RR but weak against PA. So if you tell us whom are you fighting you would get a better response. Between we have not even touched on rogue yet.
